Let me grab my mug of tea (I think it’s the 4th or 5th of the day?) and let’s chat a wee bit…

I recently finished a quilt, getting it off my quilting UFO pile, and I’m enjoying sitting in my favourite chair in the living room, sipping my tea and contemplating life.  Ok, so I’m really answering emails, scheduling appointments, and rewarding myself with my favourite YouTube episodes (are those even called episodes?), but “contemplating life” sounds much more sophisticated, doesn’t it?

Back to the quilt. It was a quilt top that I had made many (many, many) years ago. It was one I made when I first started quilting. I had bought a jelly roll – they were quite a novelty to me at the time – and saw a video on making a “Jelly Roll Race” quilt, so I made my own.  I admired it, and then it went into a pile with other quilt tops (you know, that quilting UFO pile). Which then went into a storage tub. Which was then emptied and its contents nicely (if I do say so myself) organized in my quilting cupboard. My thinking, when doing this was that I was more likely to finish my UFO pile when I could see them and had better access to them. And maybe I’d be less inclined to make too many more quilt tops before completing the quilts I already started… trying to be realistic here. I’m not going to stop making quilts… just need to change the quilt ratio to being higher on the finishing side than on the making new side and I’ll eventually catch up. I tell myself that sincerely. My UFO pile seems to disagree.

This particular quilt is simple in its design and execution. Straight rows of 2 ½ inch strips. It also isn’t a very large quilt. So, I thought of using it as an opportunity to try out some free-motion quilting on my domestic sewing machine. The urge to get it done and off my to-do list won-out though and I did a very simple straight-line quilting pattern on it.  Kudos to me on that decision, ‘cuz I’m really enjoying the simplicity of it!  The colours and design of the material are really pretty and soft – and that is what you get to focus on without any fancy quilting distracting the eye. Maybe I’ll be brave (and patient) enough to try free-motion quilting on the next quilt. Ah, the theory of “ there’s always next time”.

Back to sitting in my favourite chair, under my (current) favourite quilt, and contemplating life I go. Maybe I’ll add contemplating my next quilt or soap to the list. I do need to make another batch of soap… hmmm… what will it be….

Thanks for sharing your time with me, and until next time, stay Krafty!

Cheers,

Jennifer (aka KraftyChick)
